This is a good candidate to be the official tree of the University of the Philippines. Its leaves are deep green with maroon undersides, in perfect consonance with the university colors. It is a small ornamental tree with festive blooms and striking foliage. Butterflies love its nectar. Boholanos call it pebrero because if blooms in February, while others call it the “Mexican firecracker” because its pink flowers, with its long tubular throats appear like exploding fireworks.
